BIO / DATOS
I was born into a creative and unconventional family. My father was a writer, my mother a painter and sculptor who studied with De Kooning in 1948. She was 18, and I was born that year. My parents were nomadic. So all of the arts and exploring new places have always been an integral part of who I am. Conceived in France, born in New York City, I began to explore the world before I was born, if not before.
My mother came from a large creative extended family. My great aunt was a sculptor, my cousin a well-known ballet dancer and choreographer. Other cousins are musicians, painters and actors. In high school I was equally involved with writing and sculpture. At the City College of NY, however, I majored in visual art.
In the early 70's, after graduation, I studied painting with Al Loving. Loving was a major influence on my development as an artist. His influence freed me to work spontaneously with mixed media and collage. During this time I graduated from the MFA program in painting at Pratt Institute.
Life intervened in the 1980s and I needed to earn a serious living, ultimately leading me to becoming a doctor of Chinese medicine. During this period, photography was my medium. Not until 2008 did I return to painting.
